Instructions to Montezuma
Montezuma is located near the southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula, 41 km (25 mi) southwest of Paquera and 8 km (5 mi) south of the town of Cóbano. There are many ways to get to Montezuma from the International Airport in San Jose, Juan Santa Maria, or the International Airport in Liberia, Daniel Oduber Quiros. You can arrive by car and ferry, bus and ferry, shuttles, shuttle boat from Jaco, or airplane and taxi/bus. Traveling to Montezuma is part of the experience.
If you are renting a car, the roads are well paved until you reach the Southern Nicoya Peninsula. This area of the country is known for its rough roads, though they are slowly improving.
If you are coming from Liberia International Airport or another destination in Guanacaste, it is about a 3-hour trip and you will encounter newly paved roads on the drive south along the eastern coast of the peninsula.
If you’re traveling from San Jose International Airport, you can speed up the trip on Route 27 through Caldera port and take the ferry from Puntarenas across the gulf (navigation time 1-1/2 hours) and then continue by car from Paquera, another 50 minutes to arrive in downtown Montezuma.
Many visitors choose the fastest way to arrive by taking a 25-minute domestic flight to Tambor from Liberia or San Jose international airports, on either Green Airways or Sansa Airlines. Once you arrive at the local airport in Tambor, Montezuma is approximately 25 minutes away. You can take a taxi or if you have booked a rental car, the company will arrange to pick you up.
